​Macro-Plastics such as bags, bottles, caps, food containers, clothes, and straws have a big impact to our life. It helped us in many ways. But most of this has a greater contribution to plastic pollution. Just like plastic bottles. There are more than a million plastic bottles that are sold in every single minute. Those plastic bottles take at least 450 years to completely degrade and every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans.
​Did you know that plastics are a big threat to animals, plants, and even human beings? According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the presence of micro-plastics in treated tap and Bottled water has raised questions about the impact that micro-plastic in drinking water might have on human health. Micro-plastics have been detected in marine water, wastewater, freshwater, food, bottled water, and even in tap water.

​When most people think of the "Dirtiest Place In the House", usually the toilet comes into their minds.

While it is true that toilets are filled with germs, there's another place in your home that's even more infested-- the kitchen. Why else do you think kitchen cleaning is extremely important? 

According to a study made by Dr. Charles Gerba from the University of Arizona (a.k.a. Dr. Germ),  the kitchen has more germs than the toilet has and four of our most used kitchen appliances are guilty of carrying an army of germs. Here are four of the most contaminated kitchen materials found in our homes according to Dr. Germ.

1. The Sponge

The first one on the list is the sponge. This is probably the most contaminated kitchen tool on the list. The sponge itself is a great breeding ground for bacteria because it stays moist all the time. In a short survey made by Dr. Germ, he found that in 1,000 sponges, 10% had E. Coli growing on them. The rest had other types of fecal based bacteria breeding.  

Dr. Germ suggests that you put your sponge in your microwave to kill the bacteria. For dishcloths, it is recommended that you change it after using. 

2. The Sink

The second on the list is the sink. Since the sink also stays moist most of the time, bacteria tend to thrive there. This is especially true if you leave your raw meat on the sink. Sinks are great breeding grounds for E. Coli because of its wet environment and endless supply of food that comes from the residues of the dishes we wash.

If you want to lessen the volume of bacteria growing on the sink, then you need to thoroughly clean it and observe proper kitchen hygiene. Two of the most effective kitchen cleaning methods to eliminate bacteria is through acidic substances such as vinegar and lemon juice, or hot steam. 

3. The Water

If you think that your kitchen water can cleanse your kitchen tools effectively, you might want to think again. Dr. Germ also mentions in his study that tap water also contains a significant volume of bacteria. He also stated that Arizona has the largest number of ground water wells that are not filtered. 

With this, Dr. Germ recommends that tap water be treated before being used or being drunk.

4. The Cutting Board

The last one on the list is the cutting board. Dr. Germ states that "it is safer to make a salad on a toilet seat than it is to make one on a cutting board." This goes to show how dirty your ordinary cutting board is. It's no surprise because that's where we put our raw meat and raw meat contains 200 times more fecal bacteria than a toilet seat. Raw meat even carries two dangerous strains of harmful bacteria known as salmonella and campylobacter with the second one being a very big factor in most food poisoning cases. 

Dr. Germ recommends that you must always buy your cutting boards in a set where one is used for meat and one is used for vegetables and fruits. This prevents cross contamination.
